The stick bite is our primary horizontal plane reference tool. It is important to photograph the stick in place with the patients standing up to insure accuracy. Be sure the bite registration material captures the lingual incisal of the mandibular incisors so it will seat in a stable position on the lower model.
Face bows are notoiously inaccurate at recording horizontal plane information. With permission form my clients I will use the stick bite to correct the horizontal plane of the face bow. This overcomes the difficult optical illusion of working on a case that is mounted so that the midline appears to be diagonal to the vertical axis. The stick bite is a critical part of smile design! It use determines midline axis and horizontal plane position. If not used, midline might become cantid and horizontal plane become tilted from the lip line. Also should be provided is bite information.
